What is Solar Energy

To put it simply, solar energy is energy derived directly via the rays of the sun and is a combination of both heat and light. The sun itself is basically one huge nuclear reaction that is constantly converting its own mass into photons, and trillions of these photons enter Earth's atmosphere every second.

Solar Energy History

Life on earth began with sun, and all of nature, including the human race, is still dependent upon solar energy. We use solar energy every day for many purposes including drying our clothes, cooking our food, and heating our water, and we have been doing so for over a thousand years. Solar power itself is derived via the conversion of solar energy into electricity. The branch of technology related to this conversion process is known as photovoltaics (or PV).

One of the main benefits of solar power is in the fact that it is a renewable energy source, making it a desirable alternative to fossil fuel energy sources such as oil and coal.

Another lies in the fact that solar energy is also a clean energy source due to the fact that it does not generate any additional pollution. Because of this, use of solar energy is on the rise, and as a result, many manufacturers are currently developing a wide variety of solar powered products including solar attic fans, solar tubular skylights, solar outdoor lights and solar pool heaters. Substituting these products for those that utilize fossil fuels instead helps preserve our environment as solar power does not produce green house gas emissions.

Types of Solar Energy

What is Solar Energy 1.Thermal energy which is energy derived from the direct heat of the sun. We use this energy for heating water, cooking, sanitation, and ventilation, as well as for drying food and clothes, and it is collected via three basic types of collectors.

High temperature collectors utilize mirrors or lenses to generate electric power, and are commonly used by solar thermal power plants for this purpose.

Medium temperature collectors utilize flat plates to heat water for homes and oher buildings.

Low temperature collectors also utilize flat plates, and are commonly used to heat swimming pools. Any of these three types of collectors can be either concentrating or non-concentrating varieties.

2. Electric energy, which can be generated using solar cells, also known as photovoltaic (PV) cells which produce electricity directly from sunlight.

Large numbers of PV cells can be connected together to form solar panels and generate even more electricity. Technology that revolves around PV cells tends to be expensive due to the fact that PV cells are made of silica in its purest form, and the purification process of silica is costly. However, many PV manufacturing companies are working to reduce the cost of production through new advances in technology.

We have been using solar thermal power plants to generate electricity for a long time and we also currently have multi-megawatt PV plants in the early stages of production so the use of solar energy is not new to us. However, it has yet to become popular and widely used. Currently, this is due in part to the fact that many solar products are still quite costly, but as more and more people around the world become familiar with and utilize solar energy, solar products will begin to cost less and less. With current economic issues to consider, such as rising gas and fuel prices, solar energy is something that could well become a viable alternative in the near future.
