Solar Skylight Installation

We will discuss the solar skylight installation in your home or office. It is easy to install solar skylight, but we recommend that you always follow the manufacturer's installation guide, but this is an overview of how to install a basic tubular light.

Check your manufacturer's guide to see if you need additional tools to install the particular model you chose.

Solar Skylight Installation Directions

  • First choose the location of your tube light. If you have a two-story home, then the light can only be installed on the second floor.

  • The path for tube must be clear. However, since the tube is flexible, the path does not have to be straight. The length of tube must fit between roof supports and roof rafters.

  • Check the attic above the location for wiring or any other possible barrier to the tube.

  • Hammer a nail into the ceiling at the spot where the ceiling fixture will be installed.

  • Go up to the attic and measure from the nail to where the roof hole will be. Also measure the tube diameter. Hammer another nail through roof from the inside of the attic.

  • Go to the roof and from center of the nail, draw a circle.

  • Remove the shingles. Cut the roof hole to the exact diameter of tube.

  • Attach the flashing. Mount the dome on the roof. Always insert nails or screws properly to avoid leaks.

  • Insert the tube and attach to dome.

  • Put the ceiling fixture inside the home.

  • Remember to insulate the dome and ceiling fixture as directed in the manufacturer installation guide.

The manufacturer has already tested the insulation system to make sure it meets quality standards. Heat and cold will not come down through the tube, nor will air conditioned or heated air be able to escape.

There are several kits available on the market to better meet your needs. In an instance where you do not have enough room for the skylight and the light fixture, you can purchase a kit that places your existing light inside the skylight itself.
