Solar Energy Advantages Disadvantages
Solar energy has so many advantages, and there are far more advantages to using solar energy
than there are disadvantages. First let's take a look at some of the advantages of making the switch to solar energy.
Solar Energy Advantages
-
Solar energy
causes much less pollution, resulting in little to no global warming.
- With proper technology, anyone can generate solar energy, eliminating dependence on oil from foreign countries.
- Solar cells require less maintenance and last longer in general.
- Solar-powered devices are easy to install.
- Solar power can provide electricity to remote areas, such as mountains tops, where electrical wires either cannot reach or are costly to install.
- Photovoltaic systems are subsidized by the government in some countries, as well as in some U.S. states.
- The conversion of solar energy to usable energy is more efficient than the conversion of biofuel from plant materials.
Solar Energy Disadvantages
- The initial cost of installing solar panels can be expensive.
- Solar cells produce DC energy which must then be converted to AC energy. This results in an approximate energy loss of 4-12%.
- Solar panels attract and collect dust, needing to be cleaned from time by time. Otherwise, the process of converting sunlight to electric current becomes less efficient.
- Solar panels require a large available area for installation in order to be able to generate sufficient electricity.
- Technicians that specialize in the installation of solar devices are hard to find due to a lack of manpower in possession of the proper skills.
- Many people are unaware of the possibilities offered by solar energy use.
- There is a shortage of purified silicon, which is used to manufacture solar panels. Although there is plenty out there, it has to be processed which requires time and money.
- The supply of sunlight available is not constant. Availability depends on factors such as location, time of day, time of year, and weather conditions.
- Because the sun doesn't deliver an abundance of energy to any one place at any one time, a large surface area is required to collect the energy at a high enough volume to be useful.
