Solar Pool Covers
Keep Water Warm
The covers work best in tandem with solar pool heaters. If you use both together, you can use your swimming pool any time of year.
A solar pool cover quickly pays for itself in big savings.
It reduces heat los, water evaporation,
chemical use, and cleaning time.
The evaporation rate of the water in your pool depends on the pool?s temperature, the air temperature,
the humidity level near the pool, and the wind speed at the surface. The higher the pool temperature,
the higher the wind speed, and the lower the humidity, the greater the evaporation rate will be.
A solar pool cover works as a vapor barrier which cuts heat loss from evaporation and saves a lot of energy.
The pool cover is also called a solar blanket. Whether your pool is
above ground or ground level,
indoor or outdoor, you will be able to achieve great results with a
solar pool cover.
How does it work.
Pool covers are inexpensive, yet highly effective. They are made of UV-stabilized polyethylene,
polypropylene, or vinyl to resist deterioration. The pool cover traps heat from the sun and transfers
it to pool to help keep the water temperature warm. It also locks in heat during the day and prevents
loss of heat during the night.
The rate of heat retention you can expect from your solar pool cover depends on what type you choose.
A transparent bubble cover may reduce pool solar energy absorption by 5%?15 %, while a completely opaque
cover will reduce it by 20%-40%.
Types of cover
The most common varieties of pool solar covers are bubble covers, vinyl covers, and insulated
vinyl covers. They can also be either transparent or opaque.
Bubble covers are actually close cousins to bubble packing material. However, they use a
much thicker grade of plastic and features UV inhibitors.
Vinyl covers are made of a heavier material. They generally last longer than bubble covers
and can hold the weight of 2-3 people.
Insulated vinyl covers are available with a thin layer of flexible insulation sandwiched
between two layers of vinyl.
- The covers can save you money by helping to keep the water clean and allowing you to use fewer chemicals.
- Solar pool covers reduce heat loss by helping to heat the pool, meaning your equipment will not have to run as often.
- Solar covers conserve water and reduce the amount of replacement water needed by 30%-50%.
- Pool covers reduce cleaning time by keeping dirt and other debris out of the pool.
Removing the pool cover is easy. Simply pull it off and store it! It floats
right on top of a pool without the need for ties or anchors to hold it in place.
Use your solar cover throughout your swimming season. For day time swimming, simply remove
the cover just before going in and replace it as soon as you are done using pool.
